Status of my blogging cloud on Sunday, June 26, 2005

As of today, my blog "cloud" is 4,360 hits in Google, but that's 204 displayed hits, and 4,140 total hits, compared to 3,590, 190, and 3,440 a week ago.  My is defined as the results of a Google search of my name in quotes and the word "blog".  Ultimately, the second number is the most accurate or reliable representation of your blog cloud.

I suspect that the numbers bounce around erratically since blogs sometimes have lists of recent comments, and a number of my older comments simply fell off those lists.  That's life, but there is also the lesson that you need to stay current and can't thrive for very long on old contributions.

My strategy for raising these numbers is to continue to make quality comments on the blogs of others, as well as to post my own blog posts when I feel that I have something to say.

Blogger holding up nicely

It seems like it's been two weeks or more since I've had any problems with Blogger.  Let's hope they keep up the good work.  All of my recent posts have been via email from Microsoft Outlook Express.

I just bought a new notebook PC on Thursday and moved everything over to it on Saturday.  You can read my blog post on the specs for the new machine.  One thing I didn't move was my browsing history, completed form field history, and my cookies.  That means I have to remember old login names and passwords and manually fill in form fields that my old machine had remembered for me.  It was enough effort moving email, address book, email accounts, and browsing favorites.

Dramatic productivity boost discovered for reading blogs

I've recently discovered a pair of techniques that have enabled me to dramatically boost my blog reading productivity:
  1. There is absolutely no need to try to read every blog every day.  Little is lost by focusing on a smaller subset that happen to pique your interest at the moment and leave the rest for a day when they happen to pique your interest.
  2. I simply read only the first page of posts that appear in my web feed aggregator (Bloglines or NewsGator) and ignore the rest of the posts, unless I happen to feel like looking at some more.  Sure, I am probably missing some interesting or even important stuff, but if I didn't have techniques for keeping my blog reading productivity high, I simply couldn't read a lot of those blogs at all.

Blogger holding up nicely lately

Blogger hasn't given me any trouble for more than a few days now.  This is a distinct improvement.

Status of my blogging cloud

As of today, my blog "cloud" is 1,410 hits in Google, but that's 177 displayed hits, and 4,510 total hits, compared to 4,620, 162, and 15,500 a week ago.  My is defined as the results of a Google search of my name in quotes and the word "blog".

I suspect that the numbers declined since blogs sometimes have lists of recent comments, and a number of my older comments simply fell off those lists.  That's life, but there is also the lesson that you need to stay current and can't thrive for very long on old contributions.
